Guatemala Mission Trip for 2009

Xol Pachaj, Guatemala

May 21-31, 2009

Peace is once again sending a team into the mountains of Guatemala to start a school for a community that is in need, May 21-31st. The community is called Xol Pachaj and it is a weaving community. We will be staying with a couple of families from the village and eating food that they provide for us. A trip like this is really a wonderful way to better experience what it is like to live in a different culture. The trip costs $900 per person and that covers everything except souvenirs. We are also working to raise money for the school building materials which will cost about $16,000.

On Thursday, May 21st our Adult Mission Team leaves for Guatemala  from O’Hare at 7:00 a.m. Once they arrive they will travel by bus and other vehicles another 6 hours into the highlands to an elevation of 6000 feet. The project is to begin the building of a 3 room school to serve over seventy children of native Mayan descent. Later this summer our college age adults will make the trip to the same village to work along side the villagers and complete the work on the school.

Along with our own luggage each mission team member will be taking the allowed extra 50 lbs in tools, equipment, books and teaching supplies. The adult mission team will return on Sunday, May 31st.
